A selection of movie poster art from around the world to promote the original Jaws film and its sequel (which was pretty good in my opinion, though not anywhere near as good as the original). These pieces of art are all fantastic, and some of the interpretations – thinking here of the Czech and Polish – are quite brilliant. The Last House on the Left radio spot (1972)

One of the most notorious and seedy horror films that made it to a theatrical release, the Wes Craven written and directed ‘The Last House on the Left’ still has the queasy sick thrill of a nasty horror film and has more power and visceral kick than most horror films of the present age. The radio spot that advertised it during its initial theatrical run is suitably gloomy and unnerving;

I watched it for the first time in the mid-nineties when it was banned in the UK, a pirate copy on VHS alongside Cannibal Apocalypse (which is rubbish, even though it has John Saxon in it). ‘Last House on the Left’ is not an easy film to watch, but it is undeniably upsetting, unsettling and gripping.

The Outbreak – who are you – Fly Boy or Rick Grimes*??? (2008)

Not since the days of the Sega Mega-CD and the notorious Night Trap has film based gaming interactivity been so much fun;

It’s a zombie movie where YOU make the decisions on what to do. The opening scene is kind of reminiscent of the Romero classic ‘Night of the Living Dead‘ and considering that this must have been fairly low budget, it really works.

*Fly Boy didn’t make it out alive in ‘Dawn of the Dead’, but Rick Grimes, as of September 2008, is still going strong in ‘The Walking Dead’.

Post Apocalypse VII – The list (link)

Following on from the rather splendid photos of ‘The Road’ that have become available recently, is an exhaustive list of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction on Wikipedia – it is well worth a look, and gives me an excuse to put the poster of ‘La Jetee’ at the top of this post, for no better reason than it looks good and is included in the list;

Bit rambling this (nothing new), and its a sort of continuation from the article I did on Ruggero Deodatas ‘Cannibal Holocaust’. The cover art, as I showed, was brutal, and did justice to the brutality of the film;

which got me thinking about all the other fantastic video cover art of that era. In the past, when writing about post-apocalypse films of the early 80’s, I have commented that the cover art on the video was usually far more spectacular than anything the film itself offered (as the majority of the films put out on video in that period was generally low budget – major films could take months to come to video).

That got me reminiscing of the video shops of 25 years ago – something some other people were doing on this forum;

I love the fact that someone on that forum mentions he collected video posters – so did I, including The Alchemist, Demons Of Ludlow, Ice Pirates, Frightmare, and my most treasured, The New Barbarians, all plastered over the bedroom…..

A modern day format war is now all but over, with Blu-Ray beat HD-DVD as the next format for films & games. Bit like the video wars of the early 80’s, when there was a 3 way tussle for the main prize of being the dominant format at the time competed for space in the rental shops (only the rich could afford to buy Video Cassette films, they cost upwards of £50 per film at the time). Betamax, Video2000 and VHS all challenged, with VHS winning out. There’s an overview here;

Cannibal Holocaust, Riz Ortolini, Exploitation & Video Nasties

One of the (if not the) most notorious exploitation films of all time, Cannibal Holcaust (directed by Ruggero Deodata) was banned in several countries upon its theatrical and subsequent video releases. The splendidly named Deodata was arrested in his homeland of Italy and charged with obscenity of making a ‘snuff’ film, a situation he brought upon himself by allowing viewers to believe that the film was actually a documentary on a tragic Jungle expedition.

Cannibal Holocaust (1980) is a controversial exploitation film directed by Ruggero Deodato and is based on a screenplay written by Gianfranco Clerici and Giorgio Stegani. Filmed in the Amazon Rainforest, it focuses on a team of four documentarians who head deep into the jungle to make a documentary on the primitive native tribes that live there. After two months and no word from the team, a famous anthropologist is sent on a rescue mission in hopes of finding the team alive. The film stars Robert Kerman as the anthropologist Harold Monroe, Carl Gabriel Yorke as director Alan Yates, Francesca Ciardi as Alan’s girlfriend Faye, Perry Pirkanen as the cameraman Jack Anders, and Luca Barbareschi as fellow cameraman Mark Tomaso.

Cannibal Holocaust is one of the best known exploitation films due to the controversy it caused upon its release. After premiering in Italy, the film was seized by the local Magistrate and Deodato was arrested for obscenity. He was later accused of making a snuff film based on circulating rumors that the film’s actors were slain for the camera. Though Deodato would be cleared of these charges, the film was banned in Italy, the UK, Australia, and several other countries for graphic gore, sexual violence, and for the genuine slayings of six animals featured in the film. While many nations have revoked the ban, it is still banned to this day in other countries around the world. Despite this notoriety, Cannibal Holocaust is seen by some critics as a social commentary on civilized society.“

When VHS top-loading videos were the thing to have in the early 80s, we were lucky enough to get one (rented, from Granda Rentals, because they cost about £500 to buy in 1982). The scene was set, one Friday evening in October, for my mother to go to the local Video Rental shop ‘Replay’ in Fazeley, and rent out a couple of videos (after paying the £25 joining fee, which entitled you to the first 2 rentals for free, as I recall – after that, rentals were £2.50 each). Their was palapable excitement as we waited for my mum to reveal what she had rented. She produced 2 brick sized VHS cases, with blank blue covers. On the spines were typed

This was in the days of the old ‘U’, ‘A’, ‘AA’ and ‘X’ film ceritifications – see the link;

so we (me, brother, sister) knew we were going to watch Clash of the Titans, and that was it. As a 12 year old at the time, I wasnt going to get to watch an X rated film. I dont really know what made Cannibal Holocaust appeal to my mother (she seems such an innocent soul);

Anyway, that cover used to haunt me as I went around the aisles and viewed the display cabinets at ‘Replay’ and the several other Video rental shops (and one video rental van) in and around Tamworth, Staffs in the early to mid eighties. My mum said that she couldnt watch the film because it wasn’t ‘what she had expected’ (???). That just added to the intrigue. When, in 1984, the Video Recordings Act took Cannibal Holocaust (and many other ‘Video Nasties’) from the rental shops, it only made its murky glamour ever more appealing.

I finally got to watch the film in 1998, when, at a car boot sale in Buckinghamshire, I chanced upon a man selling reasonable bootlegs of all the Video Nasties, with the original cover art (in washed out photocopy colour). I purchased Cannibal Holocaust and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and got a typed-up list of all the goodies he sold, a list over several pages long. He did mail order, £5 per film. I got a couple more videos via the post, including a grainy copy of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, but then he never got back to me when I requested Clockwork Orange and The Beyond. Never found out what happened to him. It is amazing to think that only 10 years ago this was how you had to go about obtaining a relatively gory horror film. It seems like it could be than 50 years ago when you look at how the internet has revolutionised how you obtain films, either through the likes of and amazon, through to torrent sites and youtube and other video hosting sites.

Anyway, I watched the film. Some parts were pretty repulsive (the animal death and cruelty scenes are horrendous, and Deodata has since admitted in an interview (that was bundled as an extra on a DVD release of the film) that he regrets including these scenes. Apart from that, the film is brutal, exciting and very gory. There is an atmosphere of dread and desperation within the film, and inevitability as the cast meet their fates.

Critical response to the film is mixed;

Critics remain split on their stances of Cannibal Holocaust. Supporters of the film cite it as serious and well-made social commentary on the modern world. Mike Bracken called it one of the greatest horror movies ever filmed, and also stated, “Viewers looking for a film that’s powerful, visceral, and disturbing have a new title to add to their must-see list.” Sean Axmaker praised the structure and set up of the film, saying, “It’s a weird movie with an awkward narrative, which Deodato makes all the more effective with his grimy sheen of documentary realism, while Riz Ortolani’s unsettlingly lovely, elegiac score provides a weird undercurrent.”Jason Buchanan of All Movie Guide said, “…while it’s hard to defend the director for some of the truly repugnant images with which he has chosen to convey his message, there is indeed an underlying point to the film, if one is able to look beyond the sometimes unwatchable images that assault the viewer.”

Detractors, however, counter with the genuine animal slayings, questionable acting, and hypocrisy that the film presents. Nick Schager criticized the brutality of the film, saying, “As clearly elucidated by its shocking gruesomeness — as well as its unabashedly racist portrait of indigenous folks it purports to sympathize with — the actual savages involved with Cannibal Holocaust are the ones behind the camera.” Schager’s racism argument is supported by the fact that the real indigenous peoples in Brazil whose names were used in the movie — the Yanomamo and Shamatari — are not fierce enemies as portrayed in the movie, nor is either tribe truly cannibalistic (although the Yanomamo do partake in a form of post-mortem ritual cannibalism).

Robert Firsching of All Movie Guide made similar criticisms of the film’s content and claimed that the “…pie-faced attempts at socially conscious moralizing make it rather distasteful morally as well. The fact that the film’s sole spokesperson for the anti-exploitation perspective is played by porno star Richard Bolla should give an indication of where its sympathies lie.” Slant Magazine’s Eric Henderson said it is “…artful enough to demand serious critical consideration, yet foul enough to christen you a pervert for even bothering.”

Cannibal Holocaust currently has a 57% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 4.7.[20] The film came 8th on IGN’s Top 10 Grindhouse films.“

The mention of Riz Ortalinis “unsettlingly lovely, elegiac score” brings me onto that very thing – the theme tune for the film. Ortalini is an Italian film composer, whose work includes the soundtrack for Mondo Cane (a documentary film that consists of a series of travelogue-vignettes that provide (the intended) Western audience with a shocking glimpse into cultural practices around the world). In some respects, it could be said that Mondo Cane was an influence on Deodata and his making of Cannibal Holocaust. His work has also been used by Tarantino, in the excellent Soundtracks for Kill Bill.

A few years ago David Kerekes (of Headpress) and David Slater produced a book that explores the history of death on film, and there is a section on Cannibal Holocaust in there. It’s fascinating and well worth tracking down – amazon have it;

Finally, if you are at all interested in the curious witch hunt that got Britain in a state about some (mainly bland or bad) horror films, you should check out John Martins’ book, “The Seduction of the Gullible: Curious History of the British “Video Nasties””. Its been reprinted twice, but is currently out of print, but you can find copies out on ebay or amazon. He also released a sequel, but the book I have mentioned remains definitive.

DIIIIVVVEE!!! King Leonidis and Prince Vultan exposed!

I just wanted to make you aware of something, because I don’t know if anyone has thought about this much, and this in no way detracts from 2 great performances in 2 excellent films, but….

…. I cant help thinking that King Leonidis from 300 and Prince Vultan from Flash Gordon look kind of similair. They even act alike, shout alike, they are both warrior royalty….starting to make sense?

Do you see the resemblance? I recommend watching both films alongside each other, mainly because they are great in their own right.

Post Apocalypse IV – Warriors Of Atlantis

This one deviates a little from the other early-to-mid eighties post apocalyptic action films. Not only is this one directed by the notorious Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust, The New York Ripper, House On The Edge Of The Park), but isnt set in a post apocalyptic world. The film does, however, borrow heavily stylistically from Mad Max II & John Carpenters ‘Escape From New York’, as well as from Italian films such as ‘The New Barbarians’ (aka ‘I Nuovi Barbari’).

It starts of with a team of scientists off the coast of Miami working to raise a sunken Russian nuclear submarine from the ocean bed. In the process of doing this they disturb and discover an ancient Atlantean relic from the sea floor and bring in an expert to analyse of it. However, during their attempts to raise the submarine off the ocean fllor, radioactive material leaks from its missile warheads and triggers the re-emergence of the lost civilisation of Atlantis. The resulting tidal wave destroys the platform and leaves a handful of survivors. They (the survivors) are rescued by two Vietnam vets-turned-heavies who are out relaxing after their latest job. The boat eventually runs aground on a Carribean island nearby and upon going ashore it is discovered that the island is devastated and its inhabitants wiped out. The aggressors are a vicious group of well-armed raiders led by ‘Crystal Skull’ and are the descendants of Atlantis’ original race. Their motivation is to set about reclaiming the world and adding the scientists who survived the tidal wave to the list of victims. For those survivors it is a fight for survival as they struggle to stay alive and defeat the raiders and send Atlantis back to the ocean floor.

This is another film where the promise of the poster art far exceeds the budget! Great artwork, DYNAMIC and EXCITING!!

"If you’re lying, I’ll be back"

No, that’s not a line from either of the ‘Terminator’ films. It’s from ‘The Exterminator’ (wonder if Schwarzenegger ever got round to watching this film…), a fantastic exploitation film from 1980, directed by James Glickenhaus and starring Robert Ginty (who also starred in the post apocalyptic Italian Sci-fi ‘Warrior Of The Lost World’, featured in an earlier post).

Very much of it’s time (the American soldiers Vietnam experience is a theme of the film) and borrowing from other brutal revenge / vigilante films of the time (e.g. the Michael Winner / Charles Bronson ‘Death Wish’) ‘The Exterminator’ satisifies as a crude, violent action thriller.

The film kicks off in Vietnam, where John Eastland (Ginty) and his buddy Michael Jefferson (Steve James) are prisoner of the Vietcong. During this opening scene there is a brutal throat slahing / decapitation of an American soldier where the head flips back with the force of the blow (all captured in slow motion). It certainly grabs the attention (the effects were done by Stan Wilson, who later went on to work on blockbusters such as ‘Terminator 2’).

Eastland and Jefferson make it back from Vietnam, but find the seemingly lawless streets of New York as hazardous a terrain as Vietnam. It is here that a gang called the ‘Ghetto Ghouls’ take revenge on Jefferson for his part in foiling a robbery. This events leads Eastland on the path to revenge his friend, and it encompasses not only the ‘Ghetto Ghouls’, but Organised Crime as a whole, including protection racketeers, Mob bosses and leaders of child prostitution rings and their clients. There’s an FBI involvement in trying to track down the vigilante that doesn’t amount to much. The main action is centred around Eastland, and his vendetta. Its primal, thrilling stuff, seeing really bad people get really bad things done to them.

To dismiss this as a bad movie is a nonsense. It’s a tough thriller, with reasonable acting and fast pacing. Well worth a look.

It left it’s mark. Apparently even Judge Dredds writers were inspired by ‘The Exterminator’ to produce a story called ‘The Executioner’, about a femal vigilante in Mega City One (as I recall, she was a trainee Judge at some point?).

The story raised questions about Dredd’s role as Judge, Jury & Executioner. Its reprinted several times – for more information;

Post Apocalypse II

In a recent post I talked about my enthusiasm for the George Miller film ‘Mad Max II’, and how it spawned several derivitive Italian Sci-Fi / exploitation films in the early to mid 80’s. One of the lesser mentioned was ‘Warrior Of The Lost World’ and starred American actor Robert Ginty, star of the exploitation video classic ‘The Exterminator’ (more of that later).

As we can see, the poster art is fantastic, and promises more than the low budget can deliver. We are talking low budget Italian exploitation at its cheapest and most absurd. You either get it or you don’t. I tend to love these things.

The film begins with a screen crawl (like the ones you see in the Star Wars films) thats HEAVY ON THE EXPOSITION. Check out the back story!!

“In another time,in a distant land… Generations after the radiation wars and the collapse of nations, government, finance, and communications, there came into existence a new Dark Age of Tyranny.
As each Sector adapted its’ own rules for survival, the evil despot PROSSOR brought to power a Congress to enforce his “Laws and Obligations” and armed a deadly Militia, The Omega, to destroy the Outsiders who were trying to establish a more tolerant society- The New Way.
The region beyond the control of The Omega is the Wasteland, a forbidden zone populated by roving tribes of desperate Marginals who engage in a barbaric struggle for territory and survival.
Meanwhile, high in the mountains, living among the ruins of past civilizations, dwells a small group of Mystics called the Enlightened Elders. It is here that the Outsiders, led by McWAYNE and his daughter NASTASIA gain inspiration in their struggle against PROSSOR and The Omega.

Hmmm. Robert McGinty plays the titular ‘Warrior, aka ‘Rider’. He is a loner in a post apocalyptic world, just like Max Rockatansky (aka Mad Max). Where he differs from Max is that he doesn’t have a V8 Interceptor. He has a talking bike. Here they both are in action, being pursued by some of the generic biker bad guys that these movies love so much;

What a stroke of luck that the ‘Rider’ has a vehicle that produces subtitles on its little mounted screen. ‘Bingo’ indeed.

The Omega (ie the bad guys) are a bit like Humungous and his crew, except that they (The Omega) never quite get it right like they got it right in Mad Max II. Donald Pleasance looks like his character ‘Blofeld’ from Dr No and adds a touch of class to this camp exploitation gubbins. The Omegas have a customised truck called the ‘Megaweapon’;

This was how the Omegas enforced their law on the lawless post-apocalypse world. It was eventually sabotaged by ‘Rider’ by pulling out some circuits from ‘Megaweapons’ underbelly. Bit of an issue for the designers of the ‘Megaweapon’, that they had allowed Single Point of Failures into their creation.

This is one of those films that it is ‘so bad it’s good’. Worth hunting down. Also, Mystery Science Theater 3000 featured it as one of the films they viewed (and gently took the piss out of).
